I’m going to share three secrets to building a successful automated online business, but first, let’s get the scary word out in the open: Sales. One top reason why people don’t launch their own businesses is that they’re afraid of selling.
But selling is really just sharing, and you already do it all the time. If you have a favorite drink at Starbucks, chances are you recommend it to your friends. Or, if you check out a new restaurant, you might rave about the dish you tried.
The key is to sell something you believe in. This brings me to the first secret:
1. Find products you align with, so you can earn a highly profitable income
Center in on what makes the product or service you’re offering special. Be its best test audience so you can be genuine in your “why” of wanting to share the experience.
When it comes to products, think in terms of high-ticket vs. low-ticket items.
Low-ticket items are things like nutritional goods, workout programs and skincare lines. These all have a low commission, and you depend on regular customers to continue buying to earn a sustainable income. So, you might resort to cold calls, chasing down friends and family, and hosting sales parties, only to make less than $50 per sale.
High-ticket items are high-quality products that result in larger revenue, so you don’t have to sell as many. What sounds better: Exhausting yourself to make 100-plus sales per month to earn $5,000 or the same amount by making two monthly sales?
2. Utilize online marketing that runs 24/7 without spamming people on social media
How many of you have gotten that “Hey Girl!” message from some sales account on Instagram and deleted it right away?
Social media is saturated with salespeople, but for a good reason. More than 3 billion social media users spend hours online daily, and paid marketing will allow you to stand out to the right ones. With this approach, you can reach thousands of people who are already looking for what you’re selling daily. No need to build a large social media follow or resort to cringe DMs to find success.
You can pick your target audience and connect with people worldwide with paid marketing. Your ads will run constantly, so you can spend your time doing what you want. Plus, you can write off every dollar you spend as a business expense.

3. Utilize automated sales systems that allow you to make passive income
Build as many automated sales systems as possible. Having landing pages and videos that you can readily share with prospective buyers can help close deals without repeatedly explaining your offerings. Automated systems decrease customer contact time, creating more freedom for you.
Automation requires upfront work, so you’ll need to practice some discipline before reaping all the benefits. Commit to a specific amount of time and take action so it will pay off later. As you get started, I suggest 15-20 hours a week but do whatever fits best with your lifestyle.
