How to Have a Greener Home

You don’t need to devote your life to sustainability to make an impact. Making a few small changes can make a big difference to the health of your household and planet. Your home is your sanctuary, after all, and a place you want to protect from harsh toxins, chemicals and waste. So, here are five ways you can have a greener home:

Choose water wisely

If you invest in one thing for health and sustainability, make it water. It’s the top ingredient that makes our world go ‘round, so the quality we use for cleaning and consumption matters. Well-sourced, alkaline-rich water can help you minimize waste, eliminate toxins, live healthier and have a cleaner home

Create a recycling center

Recycling is a no-brainer for the planet, but only about 35% of people do it. Why? Because many don’t understand what can be recycled. Creating a small recycling center in your home can make it easy for everyone around. Label containers in your house for recyclable goods: one for glass, another for paper, plastic and metal, and another for reusable items. Next to them, have a list of things that are not recyclable, such as plastic bags, take-out containers, wax-coated cardboard and bubble wrap.

Seal air leaks

Conceal any openings and cracks in ceilings, walls, window edges and floors, especially if you have an older house. A well-insulated home will reduce your heating bill and carbon footprint while creating a more comfortable environment.

Don’t fall for fast fashion

Fast fashion invites chemicals into your home and contributes to serious pollution. Instead, try clothing swaps with friends, buy vintage or invest in long-lasting staple pieces you can mix and match. You’ll reduce clutter in your closet by being more mindful about clothing consumption.

Grow your own

Opt for plants better suited to your environment, so they require less maintenance (read: natural resources). Ditch commercial fertilizer and use composted kitchen scraps for rich, sustainable soil. Another bonus: Growing your own garden with native plants, veggies and herbs also cuts down on carbon emissions.

The key to treating the planet–and your home–kindly is by starting small. A little upfront work to have a more sustainable household pays off big when it comes to energy bills, cleanliness and overall health. For more ways to lead a greener lifestyle at home, click here.
