How to Practice Mindfulness and Find Your Purpose

You can plan for success, but will you be in the right frame of mind to receive it when it comes?

Practicing mindfulness can help you stay in tune with your life as significant shifts happen. Mindfulness lets you create the space to become the best version of yourself because you stop being reactive and start being proactive. When you live life intentionally, your worth and purpose know no bounds.

Mindfulness is about focusing on the present moment so that you can practice it anytime and anywhere. All you need is yourself. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Start small.

The modern world is full of distractions, so it may feel overwhelming to quiet the mind. Try practicing mindfulness in mini increments. Close your eyes and take 20 deep breaths. If you’re feeling rushed, remember that you deserve to take this time for yourself. You’ll find it to be a more energizing break than scrolling social media or eating out of boredom.

Ground yourself.

Mindfulness makes you more aware of your connection to the earth. Try beginning from a quiet place, sitting in a comfortable, cross-legged position, or lying on your back, with hands at your sides. Let your body feel rooted and stable to the ground as you close your eyes and inhale and exhale deeply, sensing your surroundings but focusing on yourself.

Just observe.

Mindfulness is about observation, not reaction. Your brain will wander at first. Don’t assign judgments to thoughts that arise. This is your time to observe them. If you start feeling distracted, concentrate on the sound and sensation of your breath.

Let go of control.

Mindfulness teaches you to let go of external factors you cannot control. So, if when you are practicing mindfulness, outside noises and distractions arise, just come back to your breath, and understand you can only control what’s within.

Be patient.

It takes time to quiet the mind, so don’t get discouraged if you have trouble. At first, you may be confronted with feelings of anxiety, stress, or the inability to sit still. Be patient. Believe in yourself, and you’ll benefit from a deeper understanding of who you are.

Practicing mindfulness a little bit each day will prepare you for a more purposeful life. You’ll begin to notice unnecessary worries and replace them with intentional thoughts and actions. You’ll also observe how your body feels, how your breath feels, and how your soul feels, and in time, this knowledge will become more important to you than external distractions.

Remember: You’re never too busy to check in with yourself. Prioritizing your relationship with yourself is how you learn to take control of your destiny.
